Kemppi is a globally leading welding equipment, services and management technology company. It has a track record of innovations that have changed the welding industry, for example the first inverter power source in 1977, the first digital power source in 1993 and the first universal welding management software in 2014. To combat the skills gap caused by growing demand and retirement of veteran welders, Kemppi developed the WeldEye welding management solution which connects its flagship welding equipment to the internet and makes the equipment easier to use for welders, and saves information about the welds to ease inspections.
When Kemppi embarked on the development of WeldEye, a serverless architecture based on AWS services was chosen. Serverless architectures and the related services being new at the time, Kemppi needed an experienced partner to help them get up to speed on their journey. Nordcloud was selected as that partner.
We helped Kemppi build the initial architecture based on AWS IoT Core, API Gateway, Lambda and other AWS services. We also designed and developed the initial Angular.js based user interface for the solution.
During the project, we trained the Kemppi development team on the technologies and tools used, enabling a seamless handover from the Nordcloud development team to Kemppi.
Developing on AWS services using a serverless architecture enabled Kemppi to develop the solution in half the time and cost compared to traditional, infrastucture based architectures. The serverless expertise of Nordcloud was key to enable a seamless rampup of development capabilities in the Kemppi development teams.
