What We’ve Learnt About Government & Cloud – How to Get Started

Post • 3 min read

Our priority here is to lower the point of entry for government organisations and help their journey to cloud. It’s why we developed a plan - alongside our friends at Microsoft and now applied across all hyperscaler environments - to step down from the big migration approach that just isn’t the right fit with government agencies.

Having worked closely with teams at government organisations, we’ve seen so many people that really want to embrace cloud. But they think there are so many obstacles, and they have so many false assumptions, that often stop them from getting started.

So our approach here delivers one or two applications to cloud, super quickly, to prove how it can be done, and how much it will cost. We learn more about the technical and organisational elements, the government teams learn more about cloud, and then we have a full-scale plan to move forward.

What’s involved?

It starts with an assessment, that’s essentially a health-check of the current environment. Then, based on this assessment, we select a POC (proof of concept) for one or two applications. And, following a couple of weeks of testing the POC, we can build a solid picture of the benefits of cloud for the organisation's specific needs.

It’s about testing the cloud in a secure way, not using guesswork.

1. Assessment

We start with a hyperscaler-supported rapid assessment of your environment, which tells a holistic story of what your infrastructure and application estate. It’s a tool-driven review that dives into areas such as cost optimisation, security, operations, performance and reliability.

2. POC

Then, based on this assessment, we select a POC for one or two applications. And, following a couple of weeks of testing the POC, we can build a solid picture of the benefits of cloud for the organisation's specific needs.

This means migrating one or two applications to your chosen public cloud, and proving value in the live environment so you can greenlight migration of full workloads, quickly. It’s about testing the cloud in a secure way, not using guesswork.

What are the outcomes?

  1. Evidence-based business case – so you understand your TCO and value creation potential with the cloud.
  2. Recommended strategy – focused on early achievements and continuous optimisation. That way, your migration is fast, cost-efficient and maximises value based on ongoing learnings.

Is it secure?

We understand that security concerns can be an obstacle for government organisations when moving to cloud, and sometimes these worries stop teams from going ahead with the assessment.

You might be asking questions like:

  • What happens to our data during an assessment?
  • Are we breaching any security regulations?
  • What do the assessors actually do?
  • Does this comply with specific public sector regulations?

And we have the answers. Rest assured, our rapid assessment process is secure and compliant right the way through. You won’t be breaching any security levels, and we take regulations around access, networking and devices into account at every stage.

It means we are able to conduct assessments for protected public sector environments across classified, unclassified, restricted, and confidential workloads.
