Project Summary.
About.
naoo AG is a Swiss-based social media platform with a set of unique features aimed at supporting local commerce and a point system that rewards users along their journey.
With its headquarters in Zug, Switzerland, naoo operates a social media app that offers an enhanced user experience through gamification elements with a highly localized approach.

The Challenge.
As naoo experienced growth in its user base, it wanted to find a way of scaling cost-effectively and improving performance of its backend infrastructure.
The operational costs associated with maintaining the infrastructure were too high on a per user basis, which would have been a challenge to naoo’s accelerating growth.
And the existing SQL-based architecture struggled to handle increasing user queries efficiently, and restricted naoo’s ability to expand and introduce new features.
The Solution.
In collaboration with Nordcloud and leveraging the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), naoo modernised its backend infrastructure, helping to significantly reduce costs per user.
In just 8 months, naoo successfully implemented Neptune Graph DB, transitioning from traditional SQL databases to a more efficient and scalable graph database architecture.
Neptune Graph DB is a fully managed AWS database service. It’s designed to store and query highly-connected data sets, making it ideal for applications like naoo’s that require complex relationships and connections between data points. It’s a smart way to store and explore data, helping make better sense of it all and making it more usable.
Nordcloud’s team conducted an assessment and review of naoo’s existing setup. And then designed the architecture and put the building blocks in place for naoo to – combined with AWS resources – modernise its database infrastructure. And, as part of its MAP funding programme, AWS funded this modernisation project.
We wanted to build an infrastructure that will allow naoo to reach millions of users with very quick response times. The decision to move from SQL to a Graph Database was a significant project as we also refactored the storage layer in the process. The results are phenomenal: we have achieved all of our goals and more.
The Results.
So, with a forward-looking architecture and ongoing collaboration with AWS and Nordcloud, naoo is positioned to embrace emerging technologies and drive continued growth and innovation in the social media landscape, in a cost-effective way.

Cost savings
Operational costs have fallen by 80%, meaning significant cost savings for naoo.

Speed
User queries now execute up to 10 times faster, boosting responsiveness and user experience.

Scale
The platform is now equipped to scale seamlessly from 50,000 active users to several million users, laying a robust foundation for future growth.

Innovation
Boosted performance and cost efficiency enable naoo to implement new features rapidly, driving continuous innovation and user engagement.
Through collaboration with AWS and Nordcloud, and our naoo team with its outstanding cloud engineers, we have been able to develop an infrastructure that puts us on par with some of the most advanced technology companies. The scaling step through Neptune Graph DB puts us in a position to reach millions of users.
