Sovereignty in practice: highlights from the Sovereign Cloud Microhack in Espoo, Finland.

Last week’s Microsoft Sovereign Cloud Microhack in Espoo brought together a wide audience for a full day of learning, practical exercises and knowledge‑sharing around one of the most important topics in Europe right now: cloud sovereignty. With the auditorium packed to the last seat and the high level of engagement, it reflected a growing interest in understanding how to apply sovereignty in real‑world environments.

A hands-on learning experience built on real scenarios

The Microhack was structured as a guided workshop rather than a competition. Participants worked through six practical challenges, each designed to explore sovereignty and security from different angles. They first attempted the exercises independently and then reviewed the solutions together with Nordcloud and Microsoft experts.

This format created the space for meaningful discussion, questions and discovery – all rooted in practical implementation rather than theory. A quiz with twelve sovereignty‑related questions added a fun interactive element, with small prizes for correct answers.

From Microsoft foundations to Nordcloud’s deep dive

The day began with a short introduction from Microsoft, outlining the broader context of sovereignty, including the EU Data Boundary. From there, the Nordcloud team provided the technical deep dive, that included:

  • An overview of how organisations can approach sovereign cloud
  • Implementing sovereign controls in public, private, and hybrid cloud models
  • A walkthrough of how Azure’s sovereign capabilities link to real implementations
  • The foundational knowledge needed before participants moved into hands‑on testing

This clear and concise structure gave participants enough context to understand the big picture before they began the practical exercises.

Guiding you through your cloud sovereignty journey

As the day unfolded, a clear message echoed through conversations: nobody has to navigate cloud sovereignty alone.
And that’s where Nordcloud’s role extends far beyond the walls of this event.

We can join your journey at any point

Whether you’re still exploring “what sovereignty means for us” or you already have risk assessments and architecture drafts on the table, we can step in exactly where you are.

We combine technical depth with risk assessment, process and governance expertise

Sovereignty isn’t just about configuring features. It’s about understanding regulations, risk models, operating models and how those align with cloud capabilities. Our teams bring both sides of that equation – the engineering detail and the structural thinking.

We support the whole lifecycle

From first questions and workshops to reviews, design, implementation and beyond, customers can rely on us for guidance, clarity and hands-on support. If you only need help with one chapter of the story, we’re there. If you want a partner for the entire book, we’re there too.

We make complex things understandable

One of the most appreciated parts of the Microhack was the way essential concepts were explained simply and respectfully – giving people the confidence to move forward. That’s how our experts work every day.
