Developer Experience in the age of AI: what we learned at Nordcloud Developer Day.
Change in software delivery does not feel theoretical anymore. With DevEx platforms maturing fast, agentic AI weaving itself into everyday workflows, and platform engineering stepping into a new phase of clarity and capability, we are watching the foundations of modern development shift in real time. Teams are rethinking how the entire lifecycle should work when automation, intelligence and well‑paved roads are part of the baseline.
This evolving landscape set the stage for Nordcloud Developer Day 2026, where with our partners IBM, Microsoft and GitHub we brought together developers, architects, platform teams and customers to explore what this transformation looks like up close. The ideas we recently unpacked in our two‑part Developer Experience blog series came to life through conversations, debates and live demos that grounded the concepts in real challenges and opportunities.
Conversations that signaled a turning point
What stayed with me wasn’t a single session or slide, but how naturally the same questions surfaced in discussions throughout the day. People wanted to talk about how these shifts fit together, how they reshape collaboration and control, and how modern platforms connect strategy with day‑to‑day developer flow.
Throughout the day, one theme kept rising to the surface: agentic AI (AI agents that can plan and act across tools and workflows). It did not appear as a buzzword or a distant idea. It showed up as something teams are already experimenting with and trying to integrate into the full development lifecycle. The conversations quickly shifted into structural questions that go beyond tools and dive into strategy.
People wanted to understand how AI fits into an already complex software delivery lifecycle. They talked about how an AI‑enabled SDLC could be embedded into a DevEx platform instead of sitting beside it as one more disconnected solution. They also explored how enterprise customers approach Developer Experience as part of a long‑term productivity strategy.
This shift in questioning felt like a signal that agentic AI is no longer an add‑on. It is becoming a natural part of how teams build and deliver software.
Understanding AI’s place in a modern SDLC
One session that stood out was Microsoft’s perspective on AI in the SDLC and the hourglass model that supports it. What resonated was how closely it mirrors reality.
At the top, AI agents expand exploration and reduce cognitive load by helping with ideation, documentation and understanding code. In the middle, governance, security and platform controls create a structure that makes this work safe. At the bottom, delivery and operations open up again and scale effectively because the right guardrails are already in place.
The takeaway was simple: agentic AI does not replace platforms. It strengthens the need for them.
The practical value of well‑designed platforms
GitHub Copilot surfaced in conversations with the same sense of maturity. It is clear that the discussion has moved well beyond code completion. Developers now see Copilot as an assistant that helps them understand systems, pipelines and infrastructure. The platform demos reinforced this direction.
Teams saw how going from zero to DTAP environments in minutes, spinning up preview environments and composing paved roads can fundamentally change the pace at which value is delivered. Well‑designed platforms are what makes both automation and agentic AI effective at scale.
The new standard for high‑performing engineering teams
Looking back at the blogs we wrote earlier this year and the discussions at Developer Day, one thing feels very clear. Developer Experience is quickly becoming the control plane for modern software delivery, and agentic AI is accelerating that shift.
The organisations that succeed will not be the ones with the longest list of agentic AI features. They will be the ones building clear platform foundations, designing opinionated but flexible paved roads, embedding governance by default and applying agentic AI with intention where it truly elevates developer flow.
Building the future of Developer Experience together
At Nordcloud, we have seen this transformation play out across real customer projects. Our teams have designed and delivered modern DevEx platforms, next‑level platform engineering solutions and AI‑enabled SDLC capabilities that reshape how organisations build, innovate and bring value to market.
The companies that choose to modernise with us are not just adopting new tools. They are changing the way their developers work every day and setting foundations that will carry them far into the future.
If you want to explore what a modern Developer Experience could look like for your organisation, we are ready to build it with you.
