Nordcloud Finland appoints Petri Kallberg as Chief Technology Officer

Kallberg makes a return to the cloud company, where he previously began working in 2013.

During his first employment, Kallberg witnessed the company transform from a 10-person startup into an international player with 100 employees. Now Kallberg comes back to a company of over 400 people and 10 European operating countries, bearing expertise from OP Bank and Sanoma Media Company, where he managed internal public cloud development.

In his new role, Kallberg’s mission is to ensure that Nordcloud´s customers in Finland succeed with the public cloud and the team remains at the forefront of AWS, Azure and GCP clouds.

“You could say that I strive toward soft values with hard, technical tools,” Kallberg says. “My task is to ensure that no one feels like they are being held back. Technology is at the heart of it. When employees are given challenges and feel like they are making progress in their field, the positive impact becomes evident on the customer’s side, too.”

Nordcloud appoints Minna Lindholm to lead its people-driven growth

CATEGORIES

News

In the beginning of 2019, Nordcloud appointed Minna Lindholm to lead its people-driven growth as the Senior Vice President of Professional Services.

Lindholm has served a long career in the ICT field. She has acted in the ranks of international players, such as Tieto, Fujitsu and Nokia, where her responsibilities included global tasks, team management and other business functions. At Nordcloud, Lindholm will direct customer projects in all ten operating countries.

Lindholm’s appointment plays a role in the Finnish company’s growth agenda

Public cloud is on the rise and with its help, Nordcloud aims to expand operations. Lindholm’s unit approaches growth from a human perspective. The goal is clear: to utilize Nordcloud’s own talent by empowering employees and giving them tools for success. The key for Nordcloud is the modern way of working that emphasizes agile methods and automation.

“This is an interesting time to join the team. It’s amazing to see how Nordcloud continues to develop from a growth company to a force of nature that reshapes big corporations,” Lindholm says. “The key in this development is people, of course. My job here is to bring the best out of our employees and create superstars: remove barriers and help them see what they’re capable of.”

Benefits and risks of lift & shift migration to public cloud

CATEGORIES

BlogInsights

Lift & shift is a common option for moving on-premises apps in the cloud while avoiding application re-designing. The aim of Lift & shift is to provision, import, and deploy applications and infrastructure resources to match existing, on-premises architecture without modification. Our customer companies choose to lift and shift in order to reduce on-premise infrastructure costs and then re-architecture application once it is in the cloud.

Typical example of Lift & shift is copying virtual machines (containing applications and data) and storage files (just data) across the internet into a pre-deployed target public cloud account. Although Lift and shift can be done manually, the process can and should be automated with tools such as AWS Server Migration Service.

Benefits of Lift and shift cloud migration

While Lift and shift is not the only way of migrating to the cloud, it can be the fastest and cheapest migration method. Compared to replatforming and refactoring business are limited cost, effort and complexity. Some of our customers also find that it is easier to re-architecture applications once they are running in public cloud, mostly because during the process of migrating the application, data and traffic, they also develop better skills.

Summary of benefits:

  • Migrate fast to public cloud
  • Reduced risk compared to replatforming and and refactoring
  • Lower initial cost compared to replatforming and and refactoring
  • Thanks to multiple cloud native and partner tools available, the process can be highly automated with limited or no downtime.

Risks of Lift and shift

Lift and shift is appeals because it is easiest way of migrating to public cloud, but it isn’t without its risks and opportunity costs.

Most typical challenge we see with Lift and shift is that existing applications are not properly resized for public cloud, as outside the cloud applications are often over-provisioned for peak load. In worst case scenario the application architecture is not cloud ready or cloud friendly resulting in degraded performance, or operational issues.

Secondly, just copying applications and data without understanding what’s what, means everything is pulled to the public cloud, including insecure configurations and malware. Therefore lift and shift project should not be conducted with lack of effective security governance, risk management, compliance with company’s security policy.

Also actual costs may be more than estimates, which can be caused by inaccurate resource estimates, providers changing prices due to upgrading, or bad performance resulting in the need for more resources.

Thirdly, applications that are lift & shifted to the public cloud may be able to take full advantage of the cost-efficiencies of native cloud features such as autoscaling and ephemeral computing.

Summary of risks:

  • Inefficient and expensive cloud consumption.
  • Lack of understanding of the cloud. Inefficiency of work, or data leakage with wrong operation due to lack of cloud knowledge.
  • Poor cost & workload estimation to due to lack of cloud skills or understanding of application data.

Nordcloud has proven services that can effectively mitigate lift and shift risks. Our post migration capacity optimisation service reduces cloud spend to optimal level and our training and advisory services can train IT organisation and create operating model that leverages cloud benefits. We believe that lift and shift is a valid option for IT organisations that want to progress fast.

Data Lake best practices in AWS

CATEGORIES

Tech

Many businesses are looking into enabling analytics on many different types of data sources and gain insights to guide them to better business decisions. A data lake is one way of doing that, where you have a centralized, curated, and secured repository that stores all your data, both in its original form and prepared for analysis. Data analysts can in a data lake then leverage the data with their choice of analytics and machine learning services, like Amazon EMR for Apache Spark, Redshift, Athena, and more.

AWS Data Lake Formation

AWS Data Lake Formation is a new tool that makes it easier for businesses to setup a data lake – something that previously was a big undertaking taking months can now be broken down into just a few days of work. Data Lake Formation will automatically crawl, clean and prepare the data which you in turn can use to train machine learning models to dedupe based on what you want the data to look like. The most interesting functionality from the new Data Lake Formation might be the centralized dashboard for secure access on table and column level across all tools in the data lake – something that previously has been quite complicated and required third party tooling.

Data lake

Data lake best practices

Best practices for utilizing a data lake optimized for performance, security and data processing were discussed during the AWS Data Lake Formation session at AWS re:Invent 2018. The session was split up into three main categories: Ingestion, Organisation and Preparation of data for the data lake. Your current bottleneck may lie in all or any of these three main categories, as they often interlink – so make sure to look into all of the categories to optimize your data.

Ingestion

The main takeaway from the session was that S3 should be used as a single source of truth where data ingested is preserved. No transformation of data should happen in the ingestion S3 storage. If you transform the data, it should be copied to another S3 bucket.

To optimize ingestion so that you don’t have a bucket full of old data at all times, you should also look into utilizing object life cycle policies so that data that you aren’t using gets moved to a cheaper storage class such as glacier. This especially makes sense for data that is outside of your time-scope and that is not interesting for analytics anymore.

Getting data in from databases can be a pain, especially if you are trying to use replicas of on-premise databases. AWS recommends that instead of using database replicas, utilize AWS Database Migration Tool. This makes it easier to replicate the data without having to manage yet another database. If you use a AWS Glue ETL job to transform, merge and prepare the data ingested from the database, you can also optimize the resulting data for analytics and take daily snapshots to preserve the database view of the records.

Organisation

Organisation of the data is usually a strategy that comes way too late in a data lake project. You should already in the beginning of the project look into organizing the data data into partitions in S3 and partition the data with keys to align with common query filters.

It is for example sometimes better to create multiple S3 buckets and then partition the buckets on year/month/day/ instead of trying to fit all of your data into one S3 bucket with even more granular partitions. This does in reality depend on what your most common queries look like. Maybe you need to partition on months instead of years depending on your usage.

Preparation

For mutable data use a database such as Redshift or Apache HBase but make sure to offload the data to S3 when the data becomes immutable. You can also append delta files to the partitions and compact them on a scheduled jobs to keep the most recent version of the data and delete the rest.

Remember to compact the data from source before you do analytics – the optimal size is between 256 and 1000 MB. If you need fast ingestion than grabbing the data from S3 you can utilize streaming data to Kinesis streams, process the data with Apache Flink and push the processed data to S3.

Collaboration in a flat organisation

Life at Nordcloud

Happy New Year 2019 for everyone!

We here at Nordcloud have a strong feeling that this year is going to be even better than last year – more dreams to be filled and goals achieved!

It is time for the first Nordcloudian Story of 2019 so let’s share our Cloud Architect Dragoș Bacîtea’s thoughts:

1. Where are you from and how did you end up at Nordcloud? My name is Dragos and I’m from Romania. I started my career by working at a local TV company selling subscriptions and moved my way up to a Global Project & Program Coordinator & Management role at Atos. I considered my management expertise was enough for one of my goals so I started working in the technical field as a Linux Administrator. From there my career took me to Microsoft where I worked for 1.5 years (from support to Technical Cloud Engineer). I then got introduced to Nordcloud and saw it as a great opportunity as a smaller company in Amsterdam! One of my goals in my career was to be a Cloud Solution Architect and Nordcloud’s relaxed culture attracted me as it was a good combination of nice colleagues and a great learning opportunity.

2. What is your core competence? Azure Solution Architecture.

3.What do you like most about working at Nordcloud? I really love the fact that we are a flat company, that gives us more chances to hang out more and to collaborate on different projects on different levels.

4.What is the most useful thing you have learned at Nordcloud? Team work is very important and at Nordcloud I see all the colleagues help each other. You can count on them.

5.What sets you on fire/What’s your favourite thing technically with public cloud ? I’m keen on taking my Microsoft certifications and gaining more overall knowledge in the Cloud/Programming area.

6.What do you do outside work? I love travelling, driving my car in any part of the day, camping in the wilderness and getting to know new cultures and languages.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

/Anna

And btw, if you feel like you’re ready to explore new adventures this year then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and let’s talk about #AWS #AZURE or #TheCloudRevolution in general!
